Minipins are very small implants on the palate or elsewhere in the upper or lower jaw that provide a firm anchorage point. A connection is created between the fixed brace and the minipin to provide greater anchorage when moving teeth, e.g. when closing gaps or other targeted tooth movements. Appliances such as the Beneslider are also attached to mini-pins.
Minipins are a valuable tool in modern orthodontics and have the potential to shorten treatment time and improve treatment results. In some cases, minipins can help to reduce the need for tooth extractions.
Reliable anchoring: They provide a stable point that does not depend on the patient’s co-operation.
Flexibility: Minipins can be inserted at various points in the upper or lower jaw.
Temporary: As they are removed once their task is complete, they are only a temporary fixture in the patient’s mouth.
Care-intensive: They require careful oral hygiene to avoid inflammation or infection. In the event of a localised infection, the pin loosens; such complications are very rare.
Possible discomfort: Some patients may initially feel a slight discomfort, especially an initial feeling of pressure.
Minipins are always part of an overall treatment plan.
If, after a thorough examination, we have determined that the use of minipins is necessary, this is usually carried out under local anaesthetic and is a minimally invasive procedure. Removing the mini-pins is also easy and usually painless.
